Conclusion

Conclusion

Pepto Bismol is a medicine that changed many peoples lives. Over the years, this pink drug continually allows people to have a regulated bowel movement and a calm unirritated stomach. We researched about this drug because of the various purposes that it can take on and the crazy outcomes that come from simple chemical changes. The fact that fascinated us the most was Pepto's ability to change into a metal after a simple oxidation process. If you ask any random person what Pepto can do, they will most likely say that it treats indigestion or diarrhea. But it can do so much more, by clearing the bacteria (helicobacter pylori) in the stomach, Pepto can even help treat stomach ulcers, but only with doctor supervision. As a derivative of salicylic acid, bismuth salicylate (pepto bismol) has anti-inflammatory and bactericidal action. Also it is an antacid which explains the fact that it neutralizes the stomach acidity which causes the ulcers to appear. Overall, Pepto Bismol is an all- around good medicine to keep around the house.

Interesting Facts on Pepto and Legal Issues to the Use or Abuse of Pepto

Interesting Facts

-Bismuth is used in many products such as cosmetic products and even hair coloring dyes.
-Bismuth is also in alloys that makes up Autonomic Sprinklers and Alarms which help electric fuses to set off the alarms and sprinkles.
-When heated bismuth cools, they naturally forms spirals and the color from the dried bismuth is caused by oxidation.

Legal Issues Pertaining to the Use or Abuse of Pepto Bismol
These issues are very similar to the possible side effects that may
happen. When you use and abuse Pepto Bismol, parts of the body including the nervous system can be affected. For example when you abuse the amount of Pepto Bismol that you intake, the level of bismuth in the medicine can cause bismuth toxicity. With bismuth toxicity can come negative side effects (also mentioned in the section about side effects); weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, motor incoordination, loss of memory, mental confusion or disorientation, tremor, and even difficulty in walking or speaking. There is also a possibility of Reyes Syndrome and Coagulation.

Even though it may cause many side effects people still use this product because it regulates bowel movements and makes the stool firmer and prevents inflammation in the stomach and intestines. The purpose as to what it serves is right in the theme song as well. It says that it gets rid of "nausea, heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, diarrhea".

Side Effects

Case Study
James is a 24 year-old male that presents to the in-window of pharmacy requesting immediate attention by a pharmacist. He states that he has a job interview in two hours but he has been having diarrhea every 30 minutes since lunchtime. He is frantic; stating he can’t miss the interview and is concerned he may have to cancel his interview if his diarrhea persists. Upon further questioning you learn he has no blood, dark coloration, or mucus present in his loose stool. He does not have a fever. RA hasn’t done anything, yet, to relieve his symptoms. James has suffered from diarrhea in the past but he has just let it “run its course.”
Current medications: none
Using the QuEST method, quickly and accurately assess James:
  1. Using the SCHOLAR-MAC method, classify the pertinent information illustrated in this case
Symptoms
Loose stools
Characteristics
No blood, dark coloration, or mucus in stool. Fever not present.
History
Has not tried anything, but needs a fast acting agent
Onset

Using the QuEST method, establish if this patient is an appropriate self care candidate. Provide a rationale:
  • No severe symptoms
  • No symptoms that persist or return repeatedly without an identifiable cause
  • Not self-treating to avoid medical care
If this patient is a self care candidate, suggest appropriate strategies (QuEST) for James. Include supportive measures with your recommendations:
  • This patient has to be alert and symptom-free in two hours:
    • Loperamide (Imodium®) can cause sedation and DIZZINESS.
    • Bismuth subsalicylate is fast acting and has no effect on alertness.
  • An appropriate alternative treatment would be to suggest bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol®) tablets
  • · General care measures:
    • Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea.
    • After diarrhea subsides, avoid alcoholic beverages and spicy foods for two additional days.
If recommending self care, talk with James regarding 2-3 counseling points (QuEST)
  1. Take 2 tablets now, and then take an additional 2 tablets every one-half to one hour as needed if symptoms persist.
  2. Do not exceed 8 doses (16 tablets) in 24 hours.
  3. Pepto-Bismol may cause temporary and harmless darkening of the tongue or stool.
When can the patient expect relief from symptoms?
  • RA should have relief from symptoms within one hour. If symptoms persist after one hour, he should take 2 more tablets.
  • When should James seek his primary care provider?
    • James should consult his provider if diarrhea CONTINUES for more than 2 days.
    • If his symptoms are accompanied fever; hearing loss; nausea; RINGING IN THE EARS; severe constipation; vomiting he should seek his provider

Positive(Normal) Health Benefits/ Medical Uses
Some positive side effects of Pepto-Bismol includes the treatment of upset stomach, heart burn and nausea. Pepto can help stall the making of the bacteria that causes diarrhea, and prevents traveler's diarrhea. With a doctors help and supervision you can use this product to treat stomach ulcers caused by certain bacteria, Helicobacter Pylori. But this should never be used to self- treat ulcers!

Drug History

The History of Pepto Bismol

Drug History

The chemical  formula of Pepto Bismol is C7H5BiO4, also Bismuth Subsalicylate. Other names for Pepto include Anti-Diarrhea medication, Mixture Cholera Infantum, and pink bismuth. A New York doctor (anonymous) of Norwich Eaton Pharmacy made Pepto Bismol originally called "Bismol: Mixture Cholera Infantum". Pepto Bismol is sold in tablets and liquids by Doctor and Gamble Manufacturing Company.

Pepto Bismol used to be manufactured  as a prescription drug in the early 1900's through the 1920's. Eventually, this drug became over-the-counter, making it easier for millions of constipated people to relieve their pains.

As Pepto Bismol progressed through business throughout the years, new versions eventually began to form. For example, Cherry flavored Pepto Bismol and chewable tablets helped children take this medication without any complications or complaints because of taste.

Introducing Us

Hello, my name is Edward. I like to eat, but I have a problem.  Every time I eat, I seem to have each of the following problems; Heart burn, Indigestion, Upset Stomach, and Diarrhea. These things always interfere with time that I can be spending with my food. It kills me inside to know that i cannot enjoy my food the way I want to. My friends would stop hanging out with me because of my conditions. However, everything changed when a bear (in the picture) gave me a fighting chance.

He gave me a substance called Pepto Bismol. With this medication, I can now spend as much time as I want with my food. I can now become fatter than I already am. Nausea, Heart burn, Indigestion, Upset Stomach, Diarrhea no more. YAY PEPTO BISMOL!

Hi, my name is Marian Hong. For all of my 16 years of living I've lived a busy life. There's many pros and cons to this... for example I've never have the time to do the necessities. Restrooms are hard to come by. So because of this, at the age of 16, I have figured out I have a problem. I believe I am... constipated. I hate to spend those many hours in the restroom when I could be enjoying the remaining childhood I have left.

But I came across this pink medicine called, Pepto Bismol. With this medicine, those long hours in the restroom have changed into just a few minutes. Nausea, Heart burn, Indigestion, Upset Stomach, Diarrhea no more. YAY PEPTO BISMOL!
